History of Father's Day

June 5, 2024

In the United States, the origins of Father’s Day lie in a memorial service held for a group of men who were killed in a mining accident in 1907. By 1909, a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd, who along with her five brothers were inspired by Mother’s Day, and sought to establish an equivalent holiday for fathers. The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972 that the day to honor fathers became a national holiday in the United States.Aging Allies celebrates fatherhood with a warm heart and understanding the interconnection of physical and mental health as we age in place. Our complimentary home visit can assess for home safety, care needs and assist with planning.

Seniors and Summer in South Florida

While summer brings us warmth and bloom, prolonged exposure to excessive heat in summer months can be dangerous. This is especially true for older adults. Every summer, more than 600 Americans die of health problems caused by excessive heat and humidity.

Older adults and individuals with chronic medical conditions are at high risk of developing heat-related illnesses, because of aging-related physical changes in the body, chronic health conditions, and even effects of taking some medications.
